Southampton is a vibrant, modern, diverse city and home to the busiest cruise port in Northern Europe with many of the worlds greatest and largest cruise ships and ocean going liners regularly gracing its shores. A world class port, it is also one of the country’s leading commercial docks. The city overlooks the Solent known throughout the world as an international sailing venue.
The City of Southampton has more than 60 ancient monuments and 450 listed buildings, including the Grade 1 listed Tudor House, the 14th century Wool House, now known as the Maritime Museum and the Museum of Archaeology, located in God’s House Tower, a 13th Century gatehouse that was once part of Southampton’s medieval defences (one of the earliest purpose-built artillery towers in Europe).
The iconic Bargate, is one of the finest medieval gatehouses in any British city and marks the entrance the historic Old Town whose streets and some of the buildings date back to the Norman period (AD1066-1200)
Southampton traded in wool and wine, and merchants’ houses can be seen in Porter’s Lane, Bugle Street and French Street and many wine vaults beneath the Old Town can be accessed by prior appointment.
The town was attacked by the French in 1338, and the western walls were built, one of the finest medieval town defences in the UK and which are still accessible today.
In the 18th century Southampton was a popular Spa Town, and Regency terraces were built to the north of the town. Jane Austen lived in Castle Square in the Old Town between1806-1809 and attended the summer balls at the magnificent Dolphin Hotel on the High Street.
The city and historic Old Town hosts several superb landmark buildings relating to the crew and passengers of the ill fated Titanic which sank in the North Atlantic in 1912
The Civic Centre, opened in various stages of completion between 1932 and 1939, is located in the heart of the city and hosts a police station, council offices, the Guildhall venue, City Art Gallery and library and is a Grade 11 listed building.
