Facts checked October 2026 against operator sources. Prices and times change, the booking page wins.

There are three kinds of cruise parking in Southampton: the port's own car parks, the official operator for Carnival UK brands, and off-site meet-and-greet or park-and-ride firms. Prices for the on-port options are quoted per cruise rather than published, so the figures below are what the off-site operators and the council list for 2026.

How each option works

ABParking. The port company's own cruise car parks are pre-booked online for the dates of the cruise and sell out in summer. On the day you drive through Dock Gate 10, follow the ABParking signs rather than the drop-off lane, park, and walk five minutes to City or Horizon; luggage goes with you to the porters at the terminal or can be dropped at the lane first if someone in the party can park. The car parks are cruise-only, locked outside embarkation and disembarkation periods, with 24-hour security and the Park Mark award. Large vehicles are accepted by arrangement with a surcharge.

CPS. Cruise and Passenger Services is the only operator allowed to park inside the port for P&O, Cunard and Princess. It is a valet system: you drive to the terminal, unload at the drop-off lane, hand the keys to a CPS attendant and the car is parked within the port. On return the car is waiting near the terminal exit. Booking is through the cruise line's own site or CPS directly, priced per cruise; a P&O search snippet shows £9.50-20 a day depending on cruise length, but the quote engine is the only reliable price.

Meet-and-greet operators. Parking4Cruises, Holiday Extras and others meet you in the terminal's short-stay car park, take the car to a compound within three miles and bring it back to the same spot for a booked time on disembarkation day. Prices run £8.40-12.70 a day in 2026, and the operators advertise up to 60% off the gate price. The risk is timing: book the return for the realistic time you will clear customs, not the ship's arrival time.

Park and ride. The Triangle car park on Cunard Road has 270 spaces beside Ocean Terminal with a shuttle or valet option, paid on arrival. Airparks and APH run compounds further out with transfer buses.

Self park in the city. The council's long-stay car parks at Bedford Place, Eastgate Street and Grosvenor Square charge £9-11 for the first 24 hours and £5 a day after, about £39-41 for a week; a taxi to the terminal costs about £10 each way. Westquay's multi-storey is £15 a day flat, about £105 a week, ten minutes on foot from City and Horizon, so no taxi needed.

For a couple driving from within two hours of Southampton, the council car parks plus taxis are the cheapest week, with Westquay the simplest. For a family of four from further away, on-port parking is worth the premium for the convenience of unloading at the terminal. For one or two people flying into Heathrow, the train via London or the pre-booked car costs about the same as a week of parking and avoids the drive.

On the day

Allow 30 minutes more than the satnav says on summer Saturdays for the queue at Dock Gate 10. Have the parking confirmation on your phone: ABParking and the meet-and-greet marshals check it at the barrier. Unload luggage at the drop-off lane before parking only if someone can stay with it; otherwise take the cases with you, the car parks are five minutes from City and Horizon and porters take the bags at the terminal door. On disembarkation morning, passengers are called off the ship in groups from about 07:00 and the car parks are busiest between 08:00 and 09:30; a later disembarkation group avoids the queue at the exit barrier.

How to choose

Disembarkation morning, step by step

Ships arrive between 05:30 and 07:00 and passengers are called off in groups from about 07:00, usually finishing by 10:00; self-help disembarkation, where you carry your own bags, goes first. With CPS valet parking the car is brought to the terminal exit and the attendant hands over the keys against your receipt. With ABParking you walk the five minutes back to the car park with the luggage; trolleys are available at the terminal but not beyond the gate, so pack for a short carry. Meet-and-greet operators ask for a return time when you book and watch the ship's arrival, but a group called late can still miss the slot, so give the operator your phone number and book the return for an hour after the scheduled arrival. Council car parks and Westquay simply need the taxi rank, where the queue is longest between 08:30 and 09:30.

Dropping someone off without parking

Every terminal has a drop-off lane at the entrance where porters take the cases; the driver can stop for the unloading and must then leave or move to short-stay parking. If you want to wave the ship off afterwards, Mayflower Park has a pay car park on the waterfront with a view of every departure from the Western Docks, and Town Quay's car parks cover the Eastern Docks. On busy Saturdays the marshals at Dock Gate 10 route private cars to the lane for the right terminal, so have the terminal name ready rather than the ship's name.

Blue Badge, large vehicles and motorhomes

City and Horizon have Blue Badge bays at the terminal, and ABParking reserves accessible spaces on request. CPS valet parking is the simplest option for passengers with limited mobility because the car is handed over at the terminal door. Large vehicles are taken by ABParking by prior arrangement with a surcharge; motorhomes are not accepted inside the port and belong at the council's long-stay car parks or at a campsite on the edge of the New Forest with a taxi in on the day.

What the quote engines ask for

ABParking and CPS price per cruise rather than per day, so the forms ask for the ship, the sailing date and the return date, and the quote covers the exact span including the overnight before an early return. Off-site operators price per day with a minimum of three or four days and add a booking fee at checkout. All of them want the registration number, a mobile number for the return, and the terminal, which is why it pays to know the terminal before booking the parking. Prices rise as the car parks fill, so a booking three months out is cheaper than one three weeks out, and a cancellation is usually free up to 48 hours before.

Valuables and insurance

Cars are left for a week or more, so take valuables and documents with you and leave nothing visible. On-port car parks are fenced, lit and patrolled with the Park Mark award; meet-and-greet compounds vary, and the better operators publish their security arrangements and insurance. Your own motor policy covers the car while parked; the operator's cover applies only to damage caused by their staff, which is one reason the on-port options command a premium for an expensive car.

Mistakes that cost money

Or do not park at all

For one or two passengers from London or the airports, a fixed-price car each way often costs less than a week of port parking plus fuel, and nobody has to find the car park at 07:00 on disembarkation day.

Next step: get to the terminal without the queue

Pre-booked cars meet you at Heathrow, Gatwick or Southampton Central and drive straight to your terminal. Prices are fixed when you book, drivers track the flight, and the car waits if you are late. Taxis from the rank at Southampton Central cost around £10 and take 5-10 minutes.
