Boarding usually runs from late morning to mid-afternoon, so a hotel within a mile of the docks means a lie-in and a five-minute taxi. The list below is sorted by distance to the Western Docks; everything on it is a short taxi from the Eastern Docks too. Walking times are those published by the city's tourism service.

The hotels in detail

Leonardo Royal Southampton Grand Harbour, the glass pyramid on West Quay Road, is the landmark hotel of the Western Docks: City terminal is a nine-minute walk, Horizon fifteen or a seven-minute taxi, the Eastern Docks terminals five minutes by taxi. It has a pool, a spa and parking at £14 a night, and it is the default choice for passengers who want to walk to the ship.

voco Southampton by IHG on Herbert Walker Avenue, the former Holiday Inn, is the closest hotel to City terminal at six minutes on foot and twelve to Horizon. Its park-and-cruise package includes up to fifteen days of parking, a one-way taxi to the terminal and breakfast, which for a fortnight's cruise beats any port car park.

Moxy Southampton and the Premier Inn Southampton West Quay share 96 Harbour Parade beside the Westquay centre and the coach station: thirteen minutes on foot to City, eighteen to Horizon and Ocean, a six-minute taxi to QEII and Mayflower. Moxy is the design-led option with parking at £13.50; the Premier Inn is the budget one with the coach station outside the door for National Express arrivals from Heathrow.

Novotel Southampton at 1 West Quay Road stands opposite the station, 0.6 miles from the Western Docks, a sensible choice for train arrivals who want to drop bags and walk into town. The ibis and ibis budget Southampton Centre on the same road are the cheapest beds within walking distance of Horizon and City.

Mercure Southampton Centre Dolphin Hotel at 34-35 High Street is the historic choice in the Old Town: Jane Austen danced at its balls and Thackeray wrote part of Pendennis here. It is a five-minute taxi to Ocean and QEII and a ten-minute walk to the Western Docks gates.

Southampton Harbour Hotel and Spa at Ocean Village is the luxury option on the Eastern side, five minutes by car from QEII and Ocean, with cruise-and-stay packages including 7, 14 or 21 days of parking and a marina view from the rooftop bar. The Pig in the Wall, inside the old walls on the Western Esplanade, is the boutique choice: nine minutes to City, thirteen to Ocean, parking £14. Ennio's Boutique Rooms and Second Nature near Town Quay are small and nine minutes from Ocean; Travelodge Southampton Central and the Elizabeth House Hotel on West Quay Road are the budget end.

Walking from the hotels

From the West Quay Road hotels (Leonardo Royal, voco, Novotel, ibis) walk south along West Quay Road to Dock Gate 10; City terminal is the first building on the left inside the gate and Horizon is up Horizon Way on the right, both within fifteen minutes. From Harbour Parade (Moxy, Premier Inn) cross Westquay's Esplanade to join West Quay Road, adding five minutes. From the Old Town and Town Quay hotels (Dolphin, Pig in the Wall, Ennio's, Second Nature) Ocean terminal is reached through Dock Gate 4 beyond the Red Funnel terminals in ten to fifteen minutes. Mayflower and QEII are a taxi from every hotel.

Park-and-cruise packages

voco Southampton (the former Holiday Inn on Herbert Walker Avenue) and the Harbour Hotel at Ocean Village sell a room the night before plus parking for the length of the cruise and a transfer. For a 7-night sailing that usually undercuts port parking plus a hotel booked separately. Several other hotels offer parking deals; ask when booking.

Near the station or near the docks

The two clusters are a ten-minute walk apart, so the choice is about the morning. Near the station (Novotel, Travelodge, ibis) suits arrivals by train who want to drop bags and go into town, and departures the morning after a cruise with an early train. Near the docks (Leonardo Royal, voco, the Old Town hotels) suits embarkation day: breakfast, check-out and a walk to City or Horizon or a five-minute taxi to the Eastern Docks. Moxy and the Premier Inn on Harbour Parade sit between the two and next to Westquay, which is the best spot for a family that wants shops and a cinema the evening before.

The night after the cruise

Ships clear by 10:00, so a hotel for the night after only makes sense with an early flight the next day or a plan to see the city. Check-in is 14:00 or 15:00; every hotel listed will hold bags from mid-morning. For an early Heathrow flight the morning after, a hotel at the airport is the safer bet than Southampton; for a late flight the same day, no hotel is needed and bag storage in the city, see luggage storage, covers the gap.

Alternatives outside the city

Winchester is fifteen minutes by train and has cathedral-close hotels for a quieter night; the New Forest villages of Brockenhurst and Lyndhurst are twenty to thirty minutes by car with country-house hotels and pub rooms. Both work for a car-free arrival the day before as long as the morning train or taxi gets you to the terminal by midday; they do not work for a late boarding on a Saturday in summer, when the roads into Southampton are slow.
