Stonehenge is about 46 miles from the port, 50-55 minutes by the M3, A34 and A303. There is no practical public transport from Southampton, so it is a hire car, a tour, or a transfer that stops there on the way to or from Heathrow and London.

| Hire car | 55 min each way | Collect at Southampton Airport or in the city; free parking at the visitor centre with a ticket |
At the stones
The visitor centre sits 1.5 miles from the circle, with a shuttle bus and a walking path across the downs; the exhibition and the reconstructed Neolithic houses take 45 minutes, the stones themselves another 45 along the roped path. The walk is exposed, so bring a layer even in July. Last entry is two hours before closing, and the site closes earlier in winter, so an afternoon transfer from Heathrow should reach Stonehenge by 14:00 in December.

Tickets
English Heritage sells timed entry; booking online ahead saves up to 15% and members go free. The 2026 adult price is in the low twenties of pounds, so check the English Heritage page for the exact figure on your date. Tickets are valid all day.
Salisbury on the way
Salisbury lies between Southampton and the stones, 25 miles from the port, with the cathedral's 123-metre spire and one of the four surviving copies of Magna Carta in the chapter house. Transfers with a Stonehenge stop often add Salisbury for an hour; by train Salisbury is 30 minutes from Southampton Central, and the Stonehenge Tour bus runs from Salisbury station to the stones in season, which is the one public-transport route that works.
How far is Stonehenge from Southampton?
About 46 miles by road, 50-55 minutes via the M3, A34 and A303.
Can you see Stonehenge from the road?
Briefly from the A303, but the visitor centre and the timed-entry path are the only way to walk around the stones.
Is a Stonehenge stop worth it on a Heathrow to Southampton transfer?
If your ship boards in the afternoon, yes: the detour adds about two hours including the visit and replaces a separate day out.
