Fly-cruise to Thailand

No ship from Southampton calls in Thailand. The Singapore loops do, and the airports are the part that needs planning.

No cruise out of Southampton reaches Thailand on a round trip, and even Arcadia's 2027 world cruise passes through Singapore, Port Klang and Penang without a Thai call. Thailand is a fly-cruise destination for British passengers: a flight to Bangkok or Phuket, then a ship on one of the South-East Asia loops that run from Singapore between November and March. Those itineraries call at Laem Chabang for Bangkok, Ko Samui by tender and Phuket, usually with Penang and Langkawi in between. This page is the primer for that trip: which ships, which airports, how far the ports are from the runways, and where the airport gap needs planning.

Dates and ports move between seasons, and the lines also sell these loops as sectors of longer Asia voyages, so treat the table as the shape of the market rather than a timetable. Royal Caribbean and Celebrity run similar Singapore-based loops in most winters.

The airports and the gap to the ship

The trap in a Thai fly-cruise is the distance between the airport and the pier. Bangkok's cruise port is Laem Chabang, an industrial harbour near Pattaya about 110 to 130 kilometres south-east of the city and around two hours by road from Suvarnabhumi airport, so a Singapore-start cruise that calls at Laem Chabang gives you a long day to reach the city, and a Bangkok-start cruise means a transfer rather than a taxi. Phuket is the easy one: ships either dock at the deep-sea port at Ao Makham on the east coast or tender into Patong on the west, and the airport in the north of the island is 45 minutes to an hour from either. Ko Samui is a tender call with its own small airport, used mainly by Bangkok Airways from Bangkok. For the terminals, the taxi and transfer options at each of these airports, the car-hire desks and what the arrivals halls look like, the Thailand airport guide covers Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket, Krabi and Samui airport by airport; it is the reference for the airport end of the plan, this page is the ship end.

Building the trip from Southampton habits

A Southampton regular is used to driving to the terminal and sailing the same day. A Thai fly-cruise needs the opposite reflexes: fly in at least one night early, because an overnight long-haul with a change in the Gulf or Singapore arrives in the morning with the ship sailing that evening and no slack for a delay; book the airport-to-ship transfer in advance rather than relying on a taxi rank at Laem Chabang; and allow for the twelve or thirteen-hour flight home being an overnight again, with a Bangkok hotel night at the end for the sailing that disembarks at breakfast. Most British passengers fly Heathrow to Bangkok or Singapore with a Gulf carrier or Singapore Airlines, so the Heathrow leg from Southampton is the same one covered on this site for cruise departures.

Practical notes

Thai baht, cards in the cities but cash in the ports; British passports get visa-free entry for tourism, check the current rule before travel. November to February is the dry season on the Gulf coast and in Bangkok; Phuket is dry from December. The ships tender at Ko Samui and often at Patong, which means queues and a wet step, so the mobility notes in the daily programme matter more here than in the Med. Keep the ship's port agent card in Thai for taxi drivers at Laem Chabang.

Can I cruise from Southampton to Thailand?

Not on a round trip. Thailand is reached by fly-cruise: a flight to Bangkok, Phuket or Singapore and a South-East Asia loop that calls at Laem Chabang, Ko Samui and Phuket.

How far is Laem Chabang from Bangkok?

About 110 to 130 km, around two hours by road from the city or from Suvarnabhumi airport; it is the port for Bangkok calls and for Pattaya.

Where do cruise ships dock in Phuket?

At the deep-sea port at Ao Makham on the east coast, or by tender into Patong on the west; the airport is 45-60 minutes from either.

When is the season for Thailand cruises?

November to March, on loops from Singapore; the dry season on the Gulf coast and in Bangkok runs from November, Phuket from December.
