Tenerife is the anchor call of every Canaries itinerary out of Southampton: Iona's winter and spring loops (December 2026, February, March and October 2027) pair Santa Cruz de Tenerife with Madeira, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote on 14 to 16 nights, and the Christmas sailing spends Christmas Eve 2026 alongside here. The island is also the one Canary where many Southampton regulars switch to a fly-cruise: Marella Explorer and Marella Discovery 2 home-port in Tenerife and Gran Canaria from November to March, with the flight into Tenerife South. This page covers both: the port day in Santa Cruz, and what changes when Tenerife is where the cruise starts rather than a stop.

The port and the walk into town

Ships berth on the long moles of the Port of Santa Cruz, directly in front of the city. Cunard's own port notes put Plaza de España, the main square, at less than a kilometre from the ship; independent guides say 20 to 30 minutes depending on which mole you are on, so read the day's programme for the berth before deciding whether to walk. The port authority usually runs a free shuttle to the plaza on cruise days, taxis wait at the gate and use the meter, and city buses 910, 916 and 920 run along the seafront road between the port, the plaza and the bus station (the Intercambiador).

From Plaza de España the city is compact: the Calle del Castillo shopping street, the Iglesia de la Concepción and the Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África market are all within fifteen minutes. The Auditorio, Calatrava's white wave on the waterfront, and the Palmetum botanical park are a half-hour walk or a short taxi south of the ship. The tram to La Laguna, the island's UNESCO old town, leaves from the Intercambiador and takes about forty minutes.

When Tenerife is where the cruise starts

Fly-cruises on Marella's Canaries season use Tenerife South (Reina Sofía) as the gateway, which sits at the southern tip of the island about 50 to 60 kilometres from the port in Santa Cruz, 45 minutes to an hour by road on the TF-1 motorway. Tenerife North, the island's other airport, is only about 12 kilometres from the port but is served mostly by Spanish domestic and inter-island flights. The line's own coaches cover the transfer on the embarkation day, but anyone adding nights before or after the cruise is on their own for the gap, and that is where a car makes the difference: the south coast resorts, Teide and the north of the island are each an hour from Santa Cruz in different directions. The deposit-free and credit-card-free options matter at this airport because the local firms work differently from the big brands; the English guide to car hire at Tenerife South airport covers the desks in the terminal, the off-airport shuttles and what each firm asks for at pick-up.

A practical pre-cruise plan: fly in a day early, collect the car at Tenerife South, drive to Santa Cruz along the motorway in under an hour and return the car at the airport the morning of embarkation, then take a taxi or the line's coach to the port. A post-cruise stay works in reverse, with the pick-up at the port side being the awkward part: most firms deliver only to the airports, so a taxi to Tenerife South and the car from there is the simpler sequence.

Practical notes

Spain, euros, card payment everywhere; Spanish with English in the port and the resorts. Santa Cruz is a working city rather than a resort, so Sunday calls find the shops shut and the market closed, and the Carnival in February and March brings street closures around the port. The sun is strong all year even when the trade-wind cloud sits on the north of the island; the south and Teide are usually clear when Santa Cruz is grey. All-aboard is strict and the Teide road is slow, so an independent Teide trip needs the ship's departure time, not the all-aboard time, in the driver's head.

How far is the cruise port from Santa Cruz city centre?

Under a kilometre to Plaza de España from the nearest berth, 20-30 minutes on foot from the far end of the moles; a free port shuttle usually runs to the square on cruise days.

Which Southampton cruises call at Tenerife?

P&O's Iona Canaries loops: Madeira, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and a Spanish or Portuguese port on 14 to 16 nights in December 2026, February, March and October 2027.

Which airport do fly-cruises from Tenerife use?

Tenerife South (TFS), about 50-60 km and 45-60 minutes from the port in Santa Cruz. Tenerife North (TFN) is closer to the port but has mainly domestic and inter-island flights.

Can I see Mount Teide on a port day?

Yes with a ship excursion or a private transfer, allowing about two hours each way to the cable car; public buses do not fit the timings of a port call.
